As a tribute to the late Cesar Cagayat (1960-2014), a very good sculptor, father and teacher, we are posting this award which we won this year. I learned a lot from Cesar's open style of teaching. He helped make my 1-woman show possible.

Your First Baby Steps to Being an Artist
The visual artist is any person who creates images by playing with different media for a certain purpose:
a. to be saved from boredom
b. to create money
c. to communicate a vision, to achieve a desired change in their environment.
you don't need all three together.
This page offers you tips on how to be a baby artist.
1. On a happy or sad season, pick your canvass and create using your chosen medium (watercolor, acrylic, cloths pasted on canvas, paper and glue, pencil, markers, anything)
2. Join a group show. There are groups of artists in your location who are eager to look for members. It is a good exposure to join a show you organized together, because it is less expensive for everybody.
3. Start with a price easy on new collectors pockets. Start with P8 per square meter, P12 or P15 per square meter. Most galleries will request upto 40% of your sales, while some may request upto 20% - In both cases, depending on the gallery location, that is absolutely fair.
4. Join more group shows, eventually becoming more active in organizing one yourself.
5. Compile a PDF of your artworks, so that if anyone is interested to see your works, you can easily send them an email.
6. Open a website, a blogspot, a wordpress, even anything that is free to start. If you can afford to get a domain, the better (approx P800 / year).
7. Offer yourself as someone who creates arts when you are in casual meetings or seeing places.
8. Leave some inventory to consign in restaurants where people go to relax and have a good meal. Avoid the rush rush type of restaurants.
9. Teach your talent, so you will be even more known in people's minds as someone who creates art. Chances are, if anybody needs an artwork commissioned, they will call you.
10. Make your own show. This can be further down the road. Create a nice theme, nice invitations, be generous with publicity (streamers) - partner with bigger offices, like the local government, tourism, organizations, etc.
11. Make a brand. A logo, make certificates if anybody buys your art. Have a Certificate of Authenticity.
